A Passion Play (Chrysalis CHR 1040)
They've come a long way from their roots, and there are plenty who'd tell you Jethro should get back to a bit of simple funk. This is a long piece, often obscure and a little self-conscious, and any trace of R and B or even pop has gone. Jethro are doing English art-rock, and they can't hope to keep their vast following with such demanding music. Nevertheless, this is a much more enjoyable album than some critics have said. It may be smart but it does have a heart.
